Italy is especially mountainous, apart from the Po plain within the north, and runs from the Alps to the central Mediterranean Sea. It consists of the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Elba and about 70 different smaller ones. There are two small unbiased states inside peninsular Italy: the Vatican Metropolis in Rome, and the Republic of San Marino.
